All You Need to Know About Botox

Botox has today emerged as the most popular non-surgical cosmetic treatment administered to a large number of people across the world. Botox is basically the brand name for toxin produced from the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum.

When used in large amounts, this toxin can be dangerous to the human body causing paralysis and several other physical and medical problems. One of the worst effects of this toxin is paralysis. However, when used in the right amount, Botox can help to treat several ailments. This is one of the major reasons why Botox was approved by the FDA in the late 1980s.

Cosmetologists across the world have been using Botox successfully since the last several years to treat wrinkles and facial creases. Today, Botox is used as an approved treatment of frown lines on the forehead, crow’s feet, and axillary hyperhidrosis.

Uses of Botox
Botox is pre-dominantly used as a treatment to reduce wrinkles on the face and also fine lines on the face. Beyond these aesthetic applications, Botox is also used to treat several medical conditions like eye squints, migraines, excessive sweating and also leaky bladders. Botox is today used to treat over 20 different medical conditions and several other applications are under investigation.

How does Botox Function
The botulin toxin or Botox is considered to be the most dangerous poisonous substance known to mankind. It is believed that a single gram of this toxin can kill one billion people. When used in high concentration, this toxin can cause respiratory failure and death. Despite being so harmful, Botox is in great demand because it has proved to be a useful therapeutic protein.

Botox can be injected in humans in small concentration. It works by preventing signals from nerve cells reaching the muscles thereby paralyzing them. This happens because the injected botulinum toxin prevents the release of acetylcholine which is responsible for contraction and relaxation of muscles. When acetylcholine is not released, abnormal muscle contraction is reduced which means that the muscles become less stiff. Botox therefore can be used for aesthetic treatments.

Botox is administered by diluting the powder in saline and then injecting directly into the neuro-muscular tissues. Botox can take 24-72 hours to show its affect.

Risks and Side Effects
When injected in small quantities, Botox is not said to be harmful and cause harmful side effects. There can however be some unwanted side effects like:

  • Mild pain and edema.
  • Numbness
  • Headache and nausea
  • Temporary weakness in the neck or muscles
  • Flu
  • Diplopia
  • Bleeding
  • Gall bladder dysfunction
  • Rashes and wheezing
  • Swelling
